- Humane Homelessness Inc.

About The Founder.

Humane Homelessness was born from a deeply personal experience one that forever changed the way founder Yetanda Massey understood homelessness, dignity, and what it means to truly see another person.

There was a season in Yetanda’s life when circumstances within a relationship made sleeping in her car feel safer than sleeping in her own home. Although she had a career, responsibilities, and a life that may have appeared stable from the outside, there were moments when she found herself navigating circumstances she never imagined would become part of her story.

During that time, public restrooms sometimes became places to quietly prepare for the day. She remembers moving from the bathroom stall to the sink, trying to maintain a sense of normalcy while people came and went around her.

One thought stayed with her:

“All these people are going about their day and have no idea what I am living through. They don’t even see me.”
That realization became a seed.

It gave Yetanda a deeply personal understanding that housing instability and homelessness do not have a single face. People experiencing homelessness are mothers and fathers, veterans and young adults, professionals and people between jobs, individuals escaping unsafe situations, and people experiencing circumstances that may be completely invisible to those around them.Years later, that experience would help bring to life Humane Homelessness.

Humane Homelessness was founded on a simple but powerful belief: before we can meaningfully serve people experiencing homelessness, we must first be willing to see them.Through access to mobile showers, personal hygiene resources, grooming essentials, compassionate human connection, and connections to supportive services, Humane Homelessness seeks to meet people at an immediate point of need while helping create pathways toward greater stability.

Yetanda’s experience also shaped an important distinction at the heart of the organization: Humane Homelessness does not believe dignity is something we give to another person. Dignity already belongs to them. Our responsibility is to honor it.What began with the painful feeling of being unseen has become a commitment to ensure that others experiencing homelessness are never treated as invisible.

That commitment lives in the words at the heart of Humane Homelessness: Seen. Valued. Loved.
